Late Summer Container Gardens for Your Balcony or Patio
August 5, 2019
Don’t let a lack of acreage keep you from growing your own food and flowers. It’s amazing what can be grown in containers on a sunny patio or balcony. Brighten up your space with colorful blossoms or enjoy fresh herbs to add to your favorite recipes. Lots of other plants do well in container gardens, too.
One of the best things about container gardens is that almost anything can be turned into a pot for your plants. Consider an old metal washtub, wood crates, even an old work boot! Just make sure that your soil will drain properly. Containers should hold water well enough that plants won’t dry out quickly, yet also be permeable enough to allow air circulation. Be sure they have enough root space for the plants they will hold.
Finally, select your plants. Start with familiar favorites and build around them. Create compositions of plants that complement each other but vary in form, texture, and size. Don’t stop with just a single pot — the more the merrier! Mix and match pots and plants to make a powerful statement. Here are a few ideas for late summer container plants.
Tend faithfully. Water often. Remove spent blooms and leaves regularly. Enjoy!
