Make the most of your outdoor living space.

How are you using your apartment patio or balcony space? Has it become a storage area? Remember, patios and balconies are rather public places, so keeping your outdoor space neat and free of debris is the neighborly thing to do.  Plus, it is possible to transform even the smallest space into a cozy outdoor retreat with some simple seating, plants and a little imagination. Your outdoor space can be a place to simply sit back and relax or if there is room, it can be used for outdoor dining.

Furniture
For most people, a couple of chairs and a small table are usually sufficient. For very small balconies, consider investing in a multi-functional piece of furniture, such as a seating bench with storage capacity. Make sure that your furniture is durable, waterproof and easy-to-clean. Wicker looks stylish and is comfortable and reasonably weather-proof.

Plants
Making use of a ledge by adding a row of colorful potted plants not only puts plants closer to the sun, but it also frees up storage space underneath. Use a tiered planter to allow for multiple plants in a small space. Be sure to choose the right plants for your apartment. You’ll want to choose plants based on whether your balcony or patio gets lots of shade or lots of sun, and select those that can thrive without constant care.
