A must to keep in your car!

It is getting cold outside and that means icy windshields. Many MRG Apartments offer covered parking areas , but in case your vehicle is out in the cold, here are some tips on de-icing your car windshield:

  1. Turn your car on to help loosen some of the snow or ice up and, likewise, warm the inside of the car up before you enter. Giving yourself an extra 10 to 15 minutes is usually enough time to get the car warmed up a bit before you take off on your journey. If your car engine does get warm enough while you are de-icing your windshield, turn on the defroster underneath the windshield and blast some hot air out. This will begin to melt the coldest snow at the bottom.
  2. A strong ice scraper is a necessity for every vehicle in a climate that experiences snowy winters. The longer the ice scraper you have, the better, so you can reach all the way across your windshield.
  3. Make a homemade de-icing solution. The first involves a 3:1 vinegar to water solution, which can be stored in a bottle to spray over your windshield. The other is a 2:1 rubbing alcohol to water solution, which can also be sprayed over your windshield. Make sure that the water is NEVER hot or even slightly warm, as this could crack your windshield.
